Every day, humanitarian workers choose to save lives, relieve suffering and stand beside people affected by war, disaster and crisis. Yet those who protect our humanity are increasingly under attack.

In just three years, violence against humanitarian workers has more than doubled, reaching 1,187 humanitarians killed, wounded, kidnapped or detained in 2025—the highest number ever recorded. More than 96% are humanitarian workers serving their own communities.

Humanitarian workers are a lifeline. Attacking them is a breach of International Humanitarian Law. It disrupts lifesaving aid, leaves communities without assistance, and puts civilian lives at risk.

A campaign by Protect Humanitarians

Protect Humanitarians is a Belgian NGO founded by Olivier Vandecasteele after surviving 456 days as a hostage. Turning pain into action, the organisation protects, supports and stands up for humanitarian workers at risk because they choose to help others. We provide psychological care and legal assistance to those affected by kidnapping, torture, arbitrary detention and other serious incidents, as well as to their families. We campaign for the release of those unjustly detained and work with universities and partners to strengthen the effective protection of humanitarian workers worldwide.
